Fiumicino is best known as the town that hosts Leonardo da Vinci International Airport of Rome, Italy’s primary air hub, bustling with travelers entering and leaving the country. However, for Romans, Fiumicino is more than just an airport town. It is a cherished destination for sunny weekend excursions, offering a delightful escape from the city to the picturesque Tyrrhenian Coast. The town’s proximity to Rome makes it an ideal spot for a day trip to enjoy the sun while dining at some of the best seafood restaurants in the region.

A thriving fishing port, Fiumicino is renowned for its incredibly fresh seafood. The town’s culinary scene has been growing, with numerous restaurants featuring chefs dedicated to showcasing high-quality local ingredients in both traditional and innovative dishes. Whether you are seeking a casual meal, gourmet experience, a cone of uniquely flavored gelato, pizzas made by award-winning pizzamakers or cakes by pastry chefs, the abundance of dining options can be overwhelming. So, where should you go for the best food in Fiumicino?

In recent years, Fiumicino has experienced a surge in new eateries, boasting impressive high standards. As a result, the town is gaining a reputation as a culinary destination, particularly appealing to locals and non-locals. The primary thoroughfare, Via della Torre della Clementina, is home to a concentration of top-notch restaurants, while others are dispersed throughout different areas. Weekdays typically offer manageable dining experiences, but securing a table on warm, sunny weekends can be challenging, so it’s advisable to make reservations in advance, especially if you already have a specific restaurant in mind.

The town may boast a plethora of dining options, but only a select few can truly vouch for the quality of their ingredients. This core principle birthed Periferia Iodata. Translating to “iodized outskirts,” Periferia Iodata is the brainchild of four esteemed chefs from Fiumicino, committed to showcasing the region and its bounty. Founded by four local chefs, two of which have Michelin stars, this association has since grown to include more culinary talents arriving to 15 members this year. The member restaurants of the association have opted to streamline their supply chain, focusing solely on the excellence of locally-sourced ingredients. Although the majority of the establishments on this list are affiliated with the association, there are also non-members who demonstrate an equally keen focus on the quality of ingredients used in their kitchens.

Having lived in Fiumicino for more than two decades and being deeply involved in the enogastronomic sector, I can guide you to the best contemporary and traditional restaurants, pizza places, pastry shops and where to get the best gelato in town. My selection criteria (of no particular order) is straightforward: excellent quality and fresh local ingredients that shine through in the dishes (with flavors not overshadowed by heavy seasoning), a good wine list to complement the meals, attentive service, and a relaxing ambiance.

1. Osteria dell’Orologio
Osteria dell’Orologio, owned by Chef Marco Claroni and his wife, Sommelier Gerarda Fine, is celebrated as one of Fiumicino’s premier restaurants for contemporary seafood cuisine. One of the founding members of Periferia Iodata, Marco sources seafood directly from the daily catch of local fishermen, ensuring the freshest ingredients for his dishes. His commitment to ethical cooking and waste reduction is exemplified by his fsh butchery project which utilizes traditional methods of salting, curing, and drying to produce various fish-based delicacies with amazing results.

Since its opening in 2009, Osteria dell’Orologio has continuously received accolades and is also one of the Michelin Guide’s recommended restaurants in the town. Marco, a respected chef and teacher at Rome’s renowned culinary school, A Tavola con lo Chef, leads a talented team, with Sous Chef Alessandro Lambiase as his second in command.

The restaurant’s impressive wine list complements the dishes perfectly, and the professionalism of the dining staff ensures a memorable visit. After a few years, the menu widened to more courses of pasta, risotto and main. Diego’s style has a creative flair but he remains attached to the traditional Italian flavors. Tasty, well-executed and always pleasant to the palate, the proposals are never disappointing.

14. Gina a Porto Romano
The story of this Gina a Porto goes back to 1954 when Gina had a fortuitous intuition to “emigrate” from the heart of Rome’s Trastevere district to the fishing town of Fiumicino. This move gave birth to the Hostaria della Spacca (later changed to Gina Hostaria del Porto) on Via Torre Clementina, the main road of Fiumicino that now hosts a stretch of restaurants, but seventy years ago had a much calmer tone. However, the venture proved to be an immense success, paving the way for an expansion that slowly evolved to more successes for Gina. Due to its popularity, the people referred to it affectionately by its founder’s name, Gina al Porto instead of its real name.

Here, the flavors and dishes crafted with expertise and love by Gina became an irresistible draw for Romans and visitors from the entire Lazio coast. It became a unique gathering place where families and renowned personalities intersected, creating a tapestry of diversity of patrons united with the kitchen of a renowned cook. Over the years, continuous recognition, awards, and accolades established the unforgettable Gina as a gastronomic icon, particularly revered for her seafood cuisine. Her commitment to quality and her innovative approach to traditional recipes made the restaurant a cornerstone of the local culinary scene.

He is also the current president of the Periferia Iodata. The location is the exclusive Marina Resort Porto Romano. With this move, the restaurant adopted the name Gina a Porto Romano, marking a new chapter in its storied history. Now, positioned directly along the waters of the Tiber River, the restaurant offers an enchanting atmosphere, day or night, summer or winter.
At Gina a Porto Romano, the dedication to using the highest quality raw materials is unwavering.
