Beviamoci Sud, which literally means “Let’s Drink South”, has finally opened its doors in Rome again after two years of hiatus due to the pandemic. In the weekend of 14 to 15 May 2022, Riserva Grande Agency organized the fourth edition of the wine event dedicated to the wines of Southern Italy at Hotel Villa Pamphili in collaboration with wine critics Andrea Petrini of Percorsi di Vino and Luciano Pignataro of Luciano Pignataro Wine Blog.
The annual event is dedicated to the wine-producing regions of Southern Italy, a territory rich in diversity of climates, soils, vines and traditions, producing extraordinarily unique personalities. The participating wineries of the event were from the regions of Lazio, Campania, Molise, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily, and Sardegna with over 200 labels. The winemakers themselves were behind the tables pouring their wines and speaking with the wine enthusiasts.
Having a profusion of native grape varieties, every region of Southern Italy has a number of unique grapes like the Tintilia of Molise; Gaglioppo and Maglioppo of Calabria; Cesanese and Malvasia Puntinata of Lazio; Cannonau of Sardegna; Primitivo, Moscatello Bianco, Bombino and Susumaniello of Puglia; Aglianico, Fiano, Falanghina and Coda di Volpe of Campania; Carricante, Zibibbo, Nerello Mascalese and Catarratto of Sicily; and Aglianico and Giosana of Basilicata. Having more warmth and sunshine, the southern regions produce more robust reds than its northern counterpart and whites that have smoky mineral characteristics, fruit-forward and floral aromas especially in the regions of Campania and Sicily.
At Beviamoci Sud, the aim of giving the spotlight to the exceptionality of this territory and enlightening the Roman public was met with great success with the big influx of wine enthusiasts who attended the two-day event. Aside from the walk-around tasting of all the participating producers, specific guided masterclasses were conducted with the collaboration of Gabriele Gorelli, Italy’s first Master of Wine, as Technical Director who took care of the seminars of the event. Horizontal and vertical tastings with focus on various terroirs and grape varieties were the themes of masterclasses.
