The South Tyrolean Wine Route, one of the oldest wine routes in Italy, begins in Nalles, goes through Bolzano, Oltradige, Bassa Atesina then to the border of South Tyrol, Salorno. With the interplay of the vineyards, monuments, and the villages, the route exudes a magnificent scenery. The majority of the wine production in Alto Adige (South Tyrol) is cultivated in this area wherein grape varieties like Merlot, Lagrein, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay find their habitat quite well. For a total surface of 206 hectares, white grape varieties dominate the number by 164 hectares as opposed to the 41 hectares allocated for the red varieties.
The village of Magrè is along this wine route and it is the area where many excellent wines are produced.
The grape varieties were planted in utmost consideration of the compositions of the soils, understanding which best suit them, a factor that Armin assesses of vital importance.
Weinhof Kobler of Armin Kobler and his wife Monika, is located along the South Tyrolean Wine Route in Magrè at an altitude of about 200 meters above sea level on soils of varied composition but with the prevalence of sandy limestone which is typical of the the area. The 5 hectares of vineyards in his proprietorship are scattered all over Magrè, at the southern end of South Tyrol.
Armin began making wine starting from the 2006 harvest and has since grown to one of the most important wine producers in the area with an annual harvest of 15,000 bottles. Having grown up in a family who dealt with the cultivation of fruits and grapevines, Armin knows the dedication needed to attain goals in the land. With a commitment of many hours and hard work in the vineyards and the cellar, his wines are able to express very well the principle that he wants to convey: the varietal characteristics, the particularity of the zone and the vintage.Interestingly, the wine labels of Weinhof Kobler are the reproductions of the top view of the zones, shapes, positions and exposures of the specific vineyards where the grapes used in the wines are cultivated.
Ogeaner Chardonnay 2016
Ogeaner, from 1958, was their first vineyard and half of it already had Chardonnay vines planted in them in sandy soil. An equilibrated wine with notable intense aromas of exotic fruits, green apple, herbs and floral notes. Fresh, sapid and full in the mouth. Fermentation and maturation on fine lees in steel.
Oberfeld Pinot Grigio 2016
At Kobler, the Pinot Grigio vines are grown in two diverse plots with different kinds of soil. Oberfeld has clay soil which makes the water remain a bit longer and keeps the soil cooler with the vines were planted in 2002. The resulting wine here is more delicate in the nose and the palate but keeps the dominance of ripe tropical fruits and moderate freshness. Fermentation and maturation on fine lees in steel.
Klausner Pinot Grigio 2016
The vines at this plot were planted in 1972 and the soil is sandy which makes the water go away fast thus the aromas, flavors and freshness of the wines have more strength as opposed to the Oberfeld. Fermentation and maturation on fine lees in steel.
Puit Cabernet Franc 2015
Vines from 2001 grown in sandy and clay soil, fermented in steel and maturation in used barrique. The characteristics of the grapes are evident in the nose giving complex pleasant aromas of peppers, spices, dark berries, violets, and minerals. Ruby red in color, good persistence in the palate and smooth.
Klausner Merlot Riserva 2012
Vines from 1972 grown in sandy – silty soil, fermented in steel and maturation in used barrique. This is an elegant and equilibrated wine with a rich color of ruby, almost garnet. It has a very nice complexity of aromas with a dominance of plums, dark berries, notes of herbs and has a good structure.
